London, Feb. 26: Golfer Stewart Cink has called on golf chiefs to have Tiger Woods dismantled — to see if he is a machine!

Woods crushed Stewart Cink 8 and 7 in the final of the Accenture World Match Play Championship in Tucson to rattle off his sixth straight win.

According to The Sun, Woods has now won eight of the nine tournaments that he has played in since last year’s Open — and was runner-up in the other one!

“I think maybe we ought to slice him open to see what’s inside there. It may be nuts and bolts. He just has such a strong sense of belief in himself. He’s never going to mess up. He’s always in control. He’s a lot better now than he has ever been at that. He’s really learned how to stay within himself. He regulates himself and his heartbeat,” said Cink.

“He’s simply the best that has ever played. I would agree with Tiger that he’s playing better now than he was when he won all four Majors in succession in 2000-2001,” he added.

Woods’ win in Arizona gave him his 63rd US Tour title, hoisting him above Arnold Palmer to fourth on the all-time list. He now needs just 20 more to knock Sam Snead off top spot.

He is also halfway towards beating Byron Nelson’s incredible record of 11 straight wins, set in 1945 when the competition was nowhere near as strong as it is now.

His latest streak has earned him a cool 3.35 million pounds and he will be an odds-on favourite to keep it going when he tees off in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill on March 13.

For a long time it seemed it would be a gloriously imperfect record – like that of Don Bradman who signed off with an average of 99.94 runs, Muttiah Muralitharan appeared stuck on 799 wickets in his last Test.

The eighth wicket was taken by Malinga and the penultimate was a run-out! Would Murali climb the peak – 800 Test wickets, a record that’s unlikely to be ever surpassed?

Time came to a standstill across all of Sri Lanka. President Mahinda Rajapaksa sat through the proceedings after lunch. The stadium sighed at its seams, the adjoining ramparts of the fort too. But India’s last pair of Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha doggedly stayed put. And then, finally, the moment arrived. Murali got Ojha to induce an edge to first slip, Mahela Jayawardene.

Murali clenched his fist, grabbed the ball and turned to deal with an onrushing tide of yelling teammates as Galle International exploded. Firecrackers went off, their smoke enveloping the ground and shrouding the players. Outside, traffic came to a halt as a public address system blabbered with excitement.

In the VIP gallery Murali’s wife, parents and brothers hugged each other. Even Ojha lingered on. Maybe he wanted to see the glint in Murali’s eyes, and that gleefully wicked smile – one last time at close range.

The most complex bowler of our times, and the most prolific, had bagged his 800th, a landmark which has raised the bar so unthinkably high that none will dare contemplate even coming close. What reasonable target can a good bowler, off-spinner or otherwise, set for himself now, given shortened career spans and the dwindling frequency of Tests?

The moment also marked the end of a golden era of spin bowling, with three geniuses – Murali, Shane Warne and Anil Kumble – now gone. Mysteriously, this was supposed to be the period of alleged demise of spin.

It’s amazing how Murali’s persistence scripted the perfect fairytale finish. There was pressure, as he admitted later, for no less was expected of him. He captured his 67th five-wicket haul in the first innings to raise expectation. Captain Kumar Sangakkara gave him ample opportunity, removing the devastating Lasith Malinga from the attack. Would Murali’s farewell and the quest for an impossible figure dash Sri Lanka’s victory march?

True to form for someone whose career cycle has been marked by endless controversy over his action, inevitably followed by a masterful performance, Murali mastered the odds in his last Test too. He played an instrumental role as India went down by 10 wickets to lose the first Test of the series (even if the Test’s outcome was lost in the outpouring of joy for Murali).

“It was tense, I was worried because we needed to win,” the modest and forthright Murali said later. “I have had my share of those who did not believe. But life is all about forgetting and forgiving. You won’t miss me much.”

He’s, of course, wrong. Murali faced abuse in Australia, had detractors within the cricket establishment, underwent biometric tests to prove he was above board. Some like Bedi will never be convinced. But it’s testimony to his grand bag of tricks that no batsman can claim to have ever mastered his wrist-spinner’s off-breaks, or that Houdini of a Doosra.

Eight hundred wickets for one man, in an 18-year career, isn’t cricket’s equivalent of landing on the moon. It’s cricket’s equivalent of discovering alien life. That’s how unique Murali was, both on and off the field. The only Tamil to play cricket for Sri Lanka, he has been a flag-bearer both for his people and the island-nation in times of war and ethnic strife. There is no greater unifier in Lanka than Murali.

His send-off was a grand, almost a family affair, the likes of which have not been seen in cricket before, not for Sobers or Bradman or Gavaskar. Marching bands trumpeted their stuff with military reverence. His parents, wife and son were invited on to the dias. For the last time on a cricket field, but not for the first, Murali spoke for the majority of cricket lovers, and not just a minority.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will examine the terms under which a contract was signed with YouTube for live streaming of Indian Premier League (IPL) matches as part of its ongoing investigations into the decisions taken when Lalit Modi was the IPL commissioner.

“Since the disciplinary committee will look into the internet rights deal with the Global Cricket Ventures (GCV), it’s obvious that all deals that GCV has done for the league will also be investigated,” people close to the development at BCCI told ET.

GCV, the owner of IPL’s internet rights, had signed the deal with the Google-owned YouTube early this year. Mr Modi’s step son-in-law Gaurav Burman is the managing partner of the UK-listed Elephant Capital, which owns 50% in GCV.

The Google-IPL deal was the first of its kind in the sporting arena worldwide. The YouTube IPL channel, which streamed the Twenty-20 matches live, had over 54 million channel views and over 90,000 channel subscribers, making it the most-subscribed and most-viewed sports channel globally. The channel’s viewership spanned nearly 200 countries with the maximum numbers coming from India, followed by the US, the Google data shows.

“We have not been contacted by BCCI with regards to our deal with GCV for the live streaming of IPL on YouTube. We continue to monitor the proceedings of the investigations and will not like to comment on speculation,” a Google India spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said that Google had signed a two-year deal with GCV and that they did not deal directly with the IPL governing council. BCCI officials added that GCV had agreed to pay IPL `25 crore per year for the Google deal.

In April 2008, the BCCI, represented by Lalit Modi, signed an MoU with Live Current Media of Canada (LCM) to build, operate and promote the official website of BCCI and IPL. However, LCM wanted to bring a third partner, GCV, into the picture and a second agreement, called a novation agreement, was signed between all the three — BCCI, LCM and GCV, Singapore — in March 2009.

The rights to operate the IPL website was assigned to GCV on the condition that it pay BCCI $750,000 by July 2009 due under the first MoU between the BCCI and LCM. In July 2009, GCV informed BCCI the rights have been assigned to GCV, Mauritius, where Elephant Capital owns 50%. BCCI, in its notice to Lalit Modi, has sought an explanation on why the board was not informed about Gaurav Burman’s direct interest in the Mauritius company.

For more than one year, Indian boxers in the 2010 Commonwealth Games camp have been training the the wushu hall at National Institute of Sports, Patiala.

The players were practicing at the wushu hall due to the ongoing construction work at the boxing hall and on Thursday, Indian campers got a chance to train at the newly built boxing hall at NIS. The hall consists of three boxing rings along with running and practice area and is fully air-conditioned, a need which most of the Indian boxers have been emphasising upon.

“We are delighted to get an opportunity to train in a fully air-conditioned hall. Conditions in India are mostly above normal temperature and the hall will give us an opportunity to train in world class facilities.

We have been demanding this hall from the past one year and we are happy that the training for 2010 Commonwealth Games will take place in this hall,” said Beijing Olympics bronze medalist Vijender after a practice camp held at the new hall. After the revised list of the boxers for the Commonwealth Games training camp, 48 boxers will take part in the camp including Beijing Olympics quarter-finalist Akhil Kumar, Asian champion Suranjoy Singh and Commonwealth champion Jai Bhagwan.

The 48 boxers took part in a three-hour long training session at the new boxing hall and trained with national coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu and other coaches.

India were left with an arduous task of batting their way to safety after losing three key wickets in the rain-hit first Test against Sri Lanka who took firm control of the game by scoring an imposing first innings total of 520 for 8 declared here on Tuesday.

The hosts relied on the the heroics of their tailenders Rangana Herath (80 not out) and Lasith Malinga (64) to rattle up a mammoth total before declaring their innings at tea and shut a struggling India out of the game.

Herath and Malinga turned out to be the unlikely batting heroes as the islanders recovered from a few early jolts and had the visitors in trouble by the end of the day by dismissing Gautam Gambhir (2), Rahul Dravid (18) and Sachin Tendulkar (8).

Frequent cloudbursts that began early on Monday morning ensured that not a single ball was bowled on the second day of India’s first Test in Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium.

Though most of the players from both teams didn’t even turn up at the stadium, there wasn’t lack of action.

The ground staff, consisting of 100-odd groundsmen, tried their best to get the ground ready for play every time the rain took a breather.

Following the early morning heavy downpour that lasted almost two hours, it was clear that Sri Lanka would not resume their domination from their overnight score of 256 for two before lunch.

Just when the ground staff, led by Jayananda Warnaweera, started removing covers — mind you, they cover the whole outfield and cushion it with truck tyres so that covers are not blown away by strong sea winds — there was again a heavy spell of rain that lasted almost an hour.

Suddenly, after lunch, the skies cleared up and Warnaweera’s men were again in action. They uncovered the whole ground and started mopping the wet patches in the outfield. At 1.50pm, umpires Daryl Harper and Rod Tucker had a close look at conditions and decided to have another inspection 2.30 pm.

Soon after came another heavy spell of showers, which effectively put an end to any hope of some play in the last session. Though the Indian team reached the venue at tea time, most of them preferred to rest in the dressing room. When play was officially called off at 3.15 pm, Yuvraj Singh, recovering from a stiff neck, was knocking a few balls with coach Gary Kirsten and bowling coach Eric Simons in the indoor facility.

With a full day’s play lost due to unseasonal rains, India’s chances of returning to Colombo for the next two Tests without trailing in the series have risen. But with heavy rains predicted on Tuesday and the weather gods likely to make their presence for the last two days as well, it will not be a surprise if Muttiah Muralitharan’s farewell Test turns out to be a damp squib.

“It is sad to see the rain coming in, especially with Murali’s involvement and his retirement. Let’s hope the weather forecast for the remaining days does not hold true,” Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Nishantha Ranatunga said.

Muttiah Muralitharan’s bid to end his Test career with a record 800 wickets has been stalled by bad weather.

After Sri Lanka’s batsmen had run up 256-2 on day one of the first Test in Galle, rain intervened on Monday.

With no prospect of a prompt start after overnight showers, a thunderstorm before lunch caused further havoc.

Play was abandoned for the day at 3.18pm local time, with rain forecast for the remainder of the match too. Muralitharan has 792 Test wickets.

Should play be possible at some stage on Tuesday, Tharanga Paranavitana will resume his innings on 110 not out with Mahela Jayawardene on eight.

Spain’s place among world football’s all-time greatest teams was assured Sunday when Andres Iniesta scored with four minutes of extra time remaining to beat the Netherlands 1-0 and clinch his country’s first World Cup.

With the teams facing a penalty shootout in a game of few clear chances, Iniesta collected a sliding pass into the area from substitute Cesc Fabregas and smashed the ball across goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg and in at the far post.

The goal ended an often ill-tempered match and made Spain only the third team to be world and European champion at the same time.

At the final whistle, the Spanish players hurried to swap their blue shirts for their more familiar red colors in time to collect the trophy. They donned shirts decorated with a single gold star to mark their triumph, becoming the eighth nation to receive the honor.

The Dutch players trudged forlornly to collect their runners-up medals, the third squad from the Netherlands to finish second in football’s biggest game.

The teams created few clear chances in normal time at Soccer City but the game opened up slightly after a cagey opening hour in which the Netherlands broke up Spain’s attempts to get its famous passing game going with physical play that brought the Dutch eight yellow cards.

Defender John Heitinga got a red card in the 19th minute of extra time to become only the fifth man to be sent off in a World Cup final.

With Spain also collecting five yellow cards, the final yellow card count beat the previous record of six in the 1986 final between Argentina and West Germany and made the final the dirtiest of all time.

Extra time was littered with almost as many chances as the rest of the game. Stekelenburg saved a low shot by Fabregas before winger Arjen Robben was blocked and defender Joris Mathijsen headed over at the other end.

With Wesley Sneijder closely attended by Spain’s defensive midfielders and Spain striker David Villa continually forced wide in a search for possession, Robben looked the most likely player to put the finishing touch to his team’s otherwise uncompromisingly physical approach.

The winger broke free in the 62nd minute but his low shot to the far post was brilliantly kept out with the toe of goalkeeper Iker Casillas’ right boot.

He was clear again with seven minutes of normal time remaining, collecting Robin van Persie’s flick from Nigel de Jong’s hopeful punt forward. Robben held off Carles Puyol’s attempts to wrestle him to the ground and tried to take the ball across Casillas, only for the goalkeeper to gather it at the forward’s feet.

Villa and Sneijder had few chances to add to their five tournament goals, the latter unable to find his range with free kicks and most notable for the sliding pass between Spain’s central defenders that set Robben free in the 62nd.

Villa went closest in the 70th when Stekelenburg somehow knocked his close-range finish over the bar, shortly before Sergio Ramos headed over the bar while unmarked.

Villa, Sneijder, Uruguay striker Diego Forlan and Germany forward Thomas Mueller remain tied at the top of the tournament scoring charts with five goals from seven matches.

The Netherlands’ physical approach only began after its attempt to defend deep in the opening exchanges allowed Spain 60 percent of possession and gave away chances. Stekelenburg had to dive at full stretch to keep out a header by Ramos, and Villa broke free of the defense only for the Netherlands to be saved by a narrow offside call.

The Dutch responded by pressing hard whichever Spanish player happened to be in possession, heralding a spell of five yellow cards in 14 minutes.

Van Persie was penalized for hacking down Joan Capdevila and Puyol took out Robben in retaliation before Mark van Bommel, whose physical play has attracted criticism throughout the tournament, got a yellow card for a foul from behind that lifted Iniesta off his feet and left him in a heap.

Ramos got his team’s second yellow card for another rough challenge before Netherlands midfielder Nigel de Jong was lucky not to get a red card when he slammed his boot into Xabi Alonso’s chest.

But one incident showed the Dutch fouls were perhaps down to surplus passion rather than a premeditated mean streak.

Casillas threw the ball upfield and out to allow Puyol to receive treatment after a heavy fall. In keeping with sporting convention, the Netherlands attempted to return possession to the Spanish but Heitinga’s punt back to Casillas deflected up off the turf and forced the goalkeeper to tip it behind for a corner.

Not a single Netherlands player went forward for the corner kick and Van Persie just rolled it along the ground for Casillas to pick up.
