Bangalore: Bengaluru Midnight Marathon 2010 on Saturday night was more than just a race. It also proved to be an effective platform to spread social messages for the welfare of the city.

Thousands of Bengaloreans got together to participate in the marathon, and hundred others were present to cheer them on. And they belonged to varying age groups and interests. Some ran with their children, and some with their pets.

Starting with the traditional Dollu Kunitha, several rock bands, beat boxers and traditional performances kept energy levels soaring.

The green theme which was the core message appealed to all. “For the first time, I am taking part in this kind of marathon. I love the idea of combining fitness and running for a cause,” said Krishnakumar, a professional.

While the events carried on outside Sigma Tech Park in Whitefield, there were quiz competitions like Kaun Banega Greenpathi happening indoors.

Aravind Limbavali, MLA,-Mahadevapura constituency and former Karnataka minister for higher education, who flagged off the marathon, said the run is one of its kind. “We want a cleaner and greener city. We want the run to bring about a change in Bangalore,” he said.

Sushma Sachdeva had come from Mumbai to cheer her husband, who ran the marathon. “Besides the fitness and fun, this event has reminded us of the vanishing greenery in the city,” she said.

“Although there are several events for the green cause, this one is different. The number of people who have shown up here is a proof that many are concerned,” said R Ashoka, transport minister.

“We want the city to develop but not at the cost of damaging the environment. We are spending `30 crore for lake development and encouraging people to use public transport to reduce pollution and traffic congestion,” he said.

Transport Commissioner Bhaskar Rao and Rotary Bangalore IT corridor’s charter-president R K Misra were also present.
