Centre a mute spectator to sedition, says Jaitley

New Delhi: After BJP leader Arun Jaitley accused the Centre of being “a mute spectator to sedition”, Home Minister P Chidambaram has said the government will take action if required for the speeches made by Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani and others on Wednesday.

Chidambaram said the Delhi conference addressed by Geelani was taped and legal advisors are examining the speeches which referred to an Azad Kashmir. “If it is established prima facie that the laws have been violated, Delhi police will take action in accordance with the law,” he said.

“I strongly reject Arun Jaitley’s charge that the Centre was doing nothing when a seminar was held yesterday in which Geelani and others participated,” Chidambaram said.

This morning, Jaitley said, “Tthe whole country was shocked when a large number of separatists groups met in Delhi under the nose of the government and had a conference and meeting to instigate sedition in India…no democracy permits a right to sedition as a free speech right to any group of people. Some misconceived representatives of civil society have advocated that these separatists were only advocating and exercising their free right to speech. The fundamental question now is can the government of India be a mute spectator?”
