Kolkata: In yet another diktat on dress code in an educational institution in West Bengal, a high school teacher in Howrah was allegedly slapped by her male colleague for wearing a salwar kameez to class.

Several male teachers of Aima Gazankol high school at Shyampur village, 120 km from Howrah town, had objected to four of their colleagues wearing salwar kameez to school.
Headmaster Shyamsundar Das had called a meeting to sort out the matter and in the course of the debate, Ganesh Mondal slapped Papri Deb, a source in the school said.

“The headmaster had only tried to convince Deb and the other lady teachers that villagers might object if they did not wear saris to school, instead of salwar kameez with mobile phones dangling from their necks,” the source said.

There is, however, no dress code in the school, the source said.

Papri lodged an FIR with Shyampur police station against Mondal, for assaulting her and insulting her, police said.

Meanwhile, class X students decided to boycott classes of the four lady teachers today but were dissuaded by the headmaster.

The incident comes barely days after a lady teacher was not allowed to take classes and assigned to the library after she defied the students’ union diktat to wear a burqa at the Aliah University, the first Muslim university in West Bengal.

The union had issued a directive in April that eight women teachers must wear burqa to class.

Sirin Middya was, however, allowed to resume taking classes after Vice-Chancellor Syed Shamsul Alam was urged by Minority Affairs Minister Abdus Sattar to intervene.
