One of the phones in the test had such high levels of bacteria that it could have given its owner a serious stomach upset.

The findings from a sample of dozens of phones by Which? magazine suggest 14.7 million of the 63 million mobiles in use in Britain today could be potential health hazards, reports the Daily Mail.

Hygiene expert Jim Francis, who carried out the tests, said: ‘The levels of potentially harmful bacteria on one mobile were off the scale. That phone needs sterilising.’

The most unhygienic phone also had 39 times the safe level of enterobacteria, a group of bacteria that live in the lower intestines of humans and animals and include bugs such as salmonella.

It boasted 170 times the acceptable level of faecal coliforms, which are associated with human waste.

Other bacteria including food poisoning bugs e.coli and staphylococcus aureus were found on the phones but at safe levels.

Which? researcher Ceri Stanaway said: ‘The bugs can end up on your hands which is a breeding ground and be passed back to your phone. They can be transferred back and forth and eventually you could catch something nasty.

‘What this shows is how easy it is to come into contact with bacteria. People see toilet flushes as being something dirty to touch but they have less bacteria than phones.

‘People need to be mindful of that by observing good hygiene themselves and among others who they pass the phone to when looking at photos, for example.’

Which? has previously found that some computer keyboards carry more harmful bacteria than a lavatory seat.

It is believed that Canalis, a former showgirl, took cocaine at a nightclub in Milan that is now under an investigation into an alleged prostitution ring in which rich clients enjoyed the favours of high-class escort girls while taking drugs.

In court documents released in Milan this week, a French escort girl has testified that she saw a number of young models and starlets, including Canalis, taking cocaine at the clubs.

“I used cocaine along with other people, among whom was Elisabetta Canalis,” the Telegraph quoted the French woman, Karima Menad, 26, as saying.

Her evidence forms part of a dossier, which has been put together by prosecutors on the alleged prostitution ring.

The investigation into two Milan nightclubs – `The Club’ and `Hollywood’ – resulted in the arrest of five people on Monday and the closing down of the two nightclubs.

The allegation dates back to 2008, a year before Italian Canalis,31, started dating Clooney, 49, who owns a luxury villa on the shores of Lake Como, north of Milan, and spends a considerable amount of time in Italy.

All three, however—two American citizens and the third a legal permanent resident—were secretly part of a homegrown terror cell conspiring to recruit and train insurgents to kill U.S. soldiers in Iraq. (Also part of the cell—two Chicago cousins named in a superseding indictment who were sentenced earlier this month after being recruited by one of the Toledo defendants.)

How did he end up in an American courtroom? Because U.S. law says that if human rights violators are U.S. nationals, commit offenses against U.S. citizens, or are present in this country, they can be charged here. In Taylor’s case, he was born in America, and he was arrested in 2006 while trying to enter the country illegally.

What the men didn’t realize was that we knew all about it—thanks to a cooperating witness who helped our investigation from start to finish, and testified at trial.

The case was opened in 2004 by our Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) in our Toledo Resident Agency. Also pitching in were JTTFs in our Cleveland and Chicago Divisions, as well as a host of local, federal, and international partners.

Our cooperating witness, who began working for us after 9/11, was actually a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army’s Special Forces, specifically playing the part of an ex-soldier, only with a twist—he’d grown disenchanted with U.S. policies, become a radical convert to Islam, and was willing to provide training for violent jihad.

For two years, during the operational phase of the investigation, our witness met with the three men—Mohammad Zaki Amawi, Marwan El-Hindi, and Wassim Mazloum—and made more than 100 secret (and fully lawful) recordings of those meetings, giving us a real-time view into the activities of the cell. At the same time, we were able to control what the trio obtained from our witness—for example, he didn’t give them actual explosives training.

Because of his military expertise, our witness gained the trust of all three men—crucial in such an operation. He even took a trip overseas to Jordan with Amawi, where he was introduced to Amawi’s family.

The recordings revealed a litany of activities and support in the name of terror. Working together or separately, the three men:

Taught themselves how to make and use explosives;
Conducted their own training exercises;
Looked at and shared often graphic jihadist videos and materials on the Internet, including on how to make a suicide bomber’s vest;
Tried to provide computers and explosives to mujahideen fighters overseas and attempted to set up a false company that would funnel money; and
Discussed possible targets for their violent jihad, ultimately agreeing that they should go after U.S. soldiers in Iraq.
In February 2006—because of mounting concern about the intentions of Amawi, who was in Jordan at the time—we shut the operation down and took all three suspects into custody. All were found guilty at trial in June 2008, becoming the first members of a homegrown terror cell since 9/11 to be convicted at trial on terrorism-related charges. And the three men were sentenced last fall to prison terms ranging from eight to 20 years.

In the end, the success of the investigation was the result of both time-tested law enforcement techniques and our growing post-9/11 partnerships and intelligence-gathering/analysis capabilities.

Dominique Cottrez, a nursing assistant in her forties, was charged with the murder of the babies and her husband Pierre-Marie Cottrez with failure to report a crime and illegally hiding corpses.

The mother admitted suffocating the infants and insisted her husband knew nothing about the pregnancies nor the killings, according to an official close to the investigations. She faces life imprisonment.

Her husband denied any knowledge of the deaths, the official said.

Stunned residents of the pair’s quiet village of Villers-au-Tertre in northern France put flowers and candles outside the two houses where police had found the skeletal remains over the previous few days.

Prosecutors described it as the worst case of infanticide in recent French history, following a string of similar cases in which isolated and troubled mothers disposed of their newborns.

The suspects were brought before a magistrate in the nearby town of Douai to hear the charges. They were remanded in custody and prosecutors promised to hold a news conference to explain the charges.

Pierre-Marie Cottrez worked as a carpenter and was a respected member of the council in Villers-au-Tertre, a 620-strong community.

“He’s on his third term in office. He used to volunteer in the community. He’s a respectable man,” local mayor Patrick Mercier told reporters.

Mercier said the councillor’s wife was a more withdrawn person who rarely took part in village life. He said she had a weight problem which might be the reason why any pregnancies had passed unnoticed.

“No-one was aware of anything at all,” said the shocked mayor.

The pair were arrested on Tuesday and questioned all day Wednesday while police used sniffer dogs to search two addresses after the new owners of a home found the bones of two infants while digging in their garden.

The house previously belonged to the parents of the arrested woman.

Search teams then headed on to the couple’s current home in another part of the village, where six more sets of remains were found, a local councillor told reporters.

Gendarmes were deployed outside one of the houses where the babies’ bodies were found, and sealed off the entrance to the macabre scene with plastic sheeting.

“I’m thinking of all the children in the world. I’m thinking of all the children who didn’t ask to be born and were thrown out a few hours later,” said local priest Father Robert Meignotte.

“I’m very upset. I baptise five children every Sunday in the 17 villages of the parish. You don’t just throw children out like that in a big bag. It’s incomprehensible,” he said.

“I’m still in shock,” said a former mayor of Villers-au-Tertre, Daniel Collignon, describing the village as a very calm and rural place.

Neighbours reacted with astonishment. “They are normal people, who even have a role in the community,” said one. “It’s incredible.”

Another neighbour, a man in his 50s, added: “These are attractive, helpful, polite and courteous people, who did nothing to make you think them capable of anything abnormal.

The couple had lived in the village for 15 years and had two grown-up daughters who have children themselves, local residents said.

The incident is the latest in a string of similar cases in France.

Earlier this year a mother was convicted of killing six of her newborn children and hiding them in the cellar of her house in northwestern France.

Another notorious recent case was Veronique Courjault, who in June 2009 was jailed for eight years by a court in Tours, central France.

She admitted to having smothered two baby boys born in secret at her expatriate home in South Korea in 2002 and 2003, and a third child born in France in 1999, and hidden them in a freezer.

She was freed in May 2010, having served four years in jail after the time she spent in remand since her arrest

“I hope to change the way people look at devices that from the outside are seemingly impenetrable,” Barnaby Jack, director of research at security consulting firm IOActive Labs, told a standing-room-only crowd before launching the demonstration using equipment he purchased over the Internet.

He spent over a year learning to break into stand-alone automated teller machines found at gas stations, bars and retail establishments.

At the annual Black Hat conference, Jack showed how he could upload his home-brewed piece of software dubbed Dillinger — named after the infamous bank robber — to an ATM made by privately held Tranax Technologies. After he infected the ATM, he approached the machine and instructed it to start dispensing cash.

Jack used a key available over the Internet to open the case of an ATM from privately held Triton Systems, then inserted a USB thumb drive that forced the machine to spit out its entire jackpot.

The ATMs he tested run on Windows CE, a version of Microsoft Corp’s ubiquitous operating system widely used in specialized computers, such as ATMs.

He said both the ATM makers have issued software that would prevent hackers from repeating the same attacks he performed onstage, but he added that ATMs from all manufacturers are still vulnerable to attack.

“I’m not naive enough enough to think I’m the only person who can do it,” he said.

He also said he believed that the ATMs used by financial institutions were also vulnerable, but that he had not simulated any attacks because he had not been able to get hold of any bank ATMs.

Guard against card frauds

Bob Douglas, vice president of engineering for Triton, said he was not aware of any successful attacks on his company’s equipment.

Officials with Tranax could not be reached for comment.

Some 6,000 hackers and security professionals are attending this week’s Black Hat conference where they are discussing vulnerabilities in everything from the software that runs PCs and mobile phones to systems that control the electric grid.

Organizers promote such research in a bid to publicize weaknesses to users so they can protect against them and encourage software makers, manufacturers and others find ways to plug those holes.

Diego Maradona made no bones about it: he would only stay on as Argentina manager on the condition that every member of his World Cup backroom staff would keep their jobs.

The Argentina Football Association were not prepared to meet the icon’s demands, and so Maradona was subsequently relived of his duties, despite being offered a new four-year deal last week.

Like his life, Maradona’s two-year reign as Argentina manager was a rollercoaster ride, with enough highs and crushing lows to put him off football management for good. The connection that the controversial boss had struck with his players over the course of the tournament was the main reason for this, and also why the AFA were so keen to tie him up until 2014.

But they refused to bow to Maradona’s ultimatum of holding on to his entire backroom staff – the AFA saw it as imperative to make changes behind the scenes – leaving the 49-year-old with big question marks hanging over his future.

Without football in his life, it’s feared that the man widely-recognised as the greatest footballer of all time will slip back into his old habits once more. By his own admission, Maradona has an addictive personality, and has previously suffered from problems with drugs, alcohol and obesity – leaving him perilously close to death on two occasions.

The past two years have seen the former Barcelona and Napoli star find a purpose in life again. Barring one unsavoury incident where he launched a tirade against his critics in a press conference, Maradona has been exactly what a coach should be: professional, reliable and always there for his players.

Sadly, though, the role of Argentina head coach could well have been the only job in football for Maradona. It’s difficult to envisage him landing a top job elsewhere because of his track record over the decades – club chairman will simply regard him as too much of a risk despite his unquestionable ability to attract crowds – and the man himself will believe that any other position would be a step down, anyway.

There have been other former players in the past who’ve found themselves at a loss without the sport. England’s Paul Gasocoigne is perhaps the prime example; he has battled alcoholism ever since hanging up his boots, and entered rehab for the umpteenth time only two weeks ago.

Maradona and Gascoigne have many similarities. Both were extremely talented players, who were adored by thousands of supporters on a weekly basis. They lived for football, and when their careers came to an end, they struggled to make the transition to management – or anything else because of the huge void left by the game.

Fortunately for Maradona, he has given himself a second chance, and hopefully this successful spell as Argentina manager will have put him on the straight and narrow for good – and may well have even saved him from a premature death.

Now he needs something to do with his life.

Researchers Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have found that consumption of at least seven servings per day of fruits and vegetables moderately reduced the risk of developing URTI in expectant mothers.

URTIs include the common cold and sinus infections, which can lead to lower respiratory problems, such as asthma or pneumonia.

Even though the majority of URTIs are uncomplicated colds, identifying ways to prevent their occurrence is important because colds are the most common reason for school and work absences.

Eating fruits and vegetables improves immunity but hadn’t previously been associated with reducing the risk of URTIs in pregnant women.

The researchers studied more than 1,000 pregnant women and found those who ate the most fruits and vegetables were 26 percent less likely to have URTI relative to those who ate the least amount.

Neither fruit nor vegetable intake alone was found to be associated with the five-month risk of URTI.

The patterns observed for total fruit and vegetable intake and either fruit or vegetable intake alone in relation to the three-month risk of URTI were consistent with those when assessing the five-month risk of URTI.

Women in the highest quartile of fruit and vegetable intake had a stronger reduced three-month risk than the five-month risk of URTI. Moreover, there was a significant decreasing linear trend for the three-month risk of URTI with consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Pregnant women have been recommended to consume at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. This study showed that intake of higher levels, 6.71 servings per day, was associated with a moderate risk reduction for URTI.

“Pregnant women may require more fruits and vegetables than usual because of the extra demands on the body,” said senior author Martha M. Werler, M.P.H., Sc.D., professor at Slone Epidemiology Center at Boston University.
