ISLAMABAD: In a move what has been dubbed as cricket diplomacy, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani will visit India to watch the highly anticipated World Cup cricket semi-final between the two rival sporting nations, the government said on Sunday.
“We have welcomed the invitation of the Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and it has now been decided that Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani will visit India to watch the World cup cricket semi-final match at Mohali on March 30,” said Farhatullah Babar, President Zardari’s spokesman. But het did not say whether the leaders would hold talks on any of the issues that strained relations between the two neighbouring countries.
The unsurprising decision that PM Gilani will watch the India-Pakistan cricket World Cup semi-final match at Mohali was taken late on Saturday when he met President Asif Ali Zardari. However, it was made public when Pakistan’s home secretary Qamar Zaman Chaudary, leading a three-member delegation, crossed the Wagah border on Sunday for talks with his Indian counterpart in Delhi. Talking to media on the Wagah border, Chaudhry said the hugely popular game of cricket would help promote harmony between the two countries.
