Hari Prasad vows to continue his fight against EVMs

HYDERABAD: Anti-EVMs champion V Hari Prasad on Tuesday said he would continue his fight against the claims of the Election Commission of India (ECI) that the Electronic Voting Machines are tamper-proof.
Speaking at a media conference along with Jana Chaitanya Vedika members, Hari Prasad said he had done no wrong but just highlighted the flaws in the EVMs. Hari Prasad was arrested by the Mumbai police on the charges of stealing an EVM and was in police custody for eight days.
Denying that he had stolen the EVM, he said “someone came to me and asked me to show how an EVM could be tampered with.” He said he handed back the machine to that person within 3-4 hours after showing him how to tamper with it. This was filmed and telecast on a private news channel, he added. “We deliberately displayed the EVM number on the television in order to show that the original machine was tampered with. Until that time, ECI had been claiming that their EVMs were in safe custody,” he said.
Hari Prasad appealed to techies in the country to come forward to expose the flaws in the EVMs. The ECI should stop backing the Electronics Corporation of India (ECIL), the manufacturer of EVMs and clear the doubts about their dependability. He said that chief election commissioner S Y Qureshi was initially supportive when JCV approached him and vowed to prove the EVMs were not above board. “But the pressure from the top lead to my arrest later.”
“I am unfazed and instead I am more inspired to continue the battle against the vulnerablilty of EVMs and will be in continuous touch with the ECI,” Hari Prasad said. He will be visiting a conference in Chicago in October to present his paper.
Hanuman Chowdary of JCV said that the whistle-blowers should not be treated as criminals. “There should be a provision in the law to protect the whistle-blowers like Hari Prasad,” he said.
