Just as soon as Rohit Sharma had shown signs he had come back a better ODI opener, he was forced to sit out with a sore hamstring. India’s other opening combination – Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan – was set to be put to test right away as India won the toss and chose to bat despite a threat of thunderstorms in the evening.
India made another change to their combination, leaving out R Ashwin for Stuart Binny, going for the seaming allrounder and relying on Suresh Raina to fill in with the excess overs. India have been struggling with fire power in the lower middle order so this will be an opportunity for Binny to showcase his hitting ability should the need arise.
Mohammed Shami, who had walked off mid-over without finishing his quota in Melbourne, was cleared fit to play.
