Bollywood’s noted lyricist-scriptwriter and Rajya Sabha member Javed Akhtar has recent death threats through an e-mail – prompting police to launch investigations into the matter and go to the root of the communication.

Akhtar has been critical of seminary Darul Uloom, Deoband, which had recently issued a fatwa saying it was un-Islamic for women to work in offices in proximity with men and decreed that acceptance of their earnings by a family was against the Sharia.

Akhtar visited the office of additional commissioner of police (west) Amitabh Gupta and lodged a complaint. E-mail, which he has received, has been submitted to the Juhu police stations for investigations.

Following the threat, Akhtar has been given police protection.
