Nissan launches diesel Micra priced up to Rs 6.05 lakh

Nissan India which had not had much presence in the Indian automobile scene has now tasted a little success with the launch of its small car Micra in July this year which has provided good numbers for the company and now it hopes to further gain the ground with the launch of diesel Micra as diesel seems to be a favourite with the cost conscious Indians.
It has been reported that Nissan launched the diesel variant of its small car Micra priced between Rs 5.59 lakh and Rs 6.05 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The car is powered by a 1.5 litre diesel engine and will be available in two variants with five speed manual transmission and according to the company will deliver a fuel economy of 23.08 km per litre.

The report quoted Kiminobu Tokuyama, the Managing Director & CEO, Nissan Motor India as saying “The success of the petrol powered Micra in the Indian market has given us confidence to introduce the diesel variant within six months of its launch in response to popular demand,”

It was also reported that Nissan had formed the 50:50 joint venture with French automaker Renault to set up a manufacturing plant at Oragadam near Chennai with an upfront investment of Rs 2,300 crore (about $500 million). The report quoted Tokuyama as saying “We signed an agreement with the Tamil Nadu government in February 2008 to invest a total of Rs 4,500 crore (about $980 million) over the next seven years for ramping up the annual production capacity to 400,000 units from the present 100,000 units and introduce a range of models for domestic and export markets.”

Nissan had earlier announced that it had plans to make India hub for the South Asian markets and the export plans of Micra to other markets. The petrol variant has been planned to be exported to Europe, Middle East and Africa also from the company. It has been reported now that though the company has achieved around 85 per cent of localisation, engine and the five-speed gearbox are imported from its plants across Asia, including Japan and China. To be positioned in the B+ segment and priced at Rs 560,000-620,000, the Micra diesel will be powered with the 1.5 litre common rail direct injection, mounted on Nissan’s V platform.

According to reports, it has been quoted Nissan R&D centre assistant chief vehicle engineer Gary Kirby as saying “The wide gear coverage enables the engine to achieve quick acceleration in city driving conditions. The eight-valve four-cylinder engine generates 47kw power at 4,000 revolutions per minute (rpm).”
