Pitroda stumped, Rahul to the rescue

AMETHI: It was a role-reversal Sam Pitroda, India’s telecommunication czar and close associate of Rajiv Gandhi, was probably not prepared for.
Face to face with ground realities in time-warped Amethi after a lapse of 22 long years, Pitroda found himself floundering many a times on Wednesday. Luckily, for him timely rescue by Rahul Gandhi, who played philosopher and guide to uncle Sam, finally saved the day.
Pitroda, accompanying Rahul on a tour to his constituency, was stumped first in Sarvan village after launch of a broadband service for the panchayat.
Rahul’s entourage stopped by a roadside dhaba for tea. Soon, a small mob formed a ring around the MP to air day-to-day grievances. One of them began with a complaint about power shortage. “Bijli nahi aa rahi hai,” said the man. “Then fix it,” suggested Pitroda before Rahul could respond.
The MP then explained that the villager was actually referring to frequent power cuts. Pitroda had another quick-fix solution up his kurta’s sleeves. “A solar farm,” he said aloud, “is just what was needed here, provided the consumers paid up.” Rahul tried to sound a word of caution. The issue, he said, was lot more complicated. “Politically may be, but not otherwise,” said the tech wizard. Reality dawned on him only after Rahul hinted at practical problems like delay in payment etc.
