LUCKNOW: In a grotesque incident, a six-year-old girl was raped by her neighbour on Sunday morning under Hasanganj police station. The accused, identified as Ramesh Balmiki (22), a resident of Alinagar Khadra, Madheganj under Hasanganj, is absconding.

The victim was playing near her house in Alinagar Khadra when Ramesh lured her into his house and raped her. The injured girl then went back to her house and narrated the incident to her mother Takdirun.

Takdirun took her daughter to a nearby hospital where she is undergoing treatment. Takdirun along with her husband Shaiyyaz, a scrap dealer, lodged an FIR against Ramesh.

Hasanganj police conducted raids at the possible hideouts of Ramesh including his relatives’ houses but he was absconding.

Since the victim would often visit Ramesh’s house, who lived with his sister, neighbours did not suspect any foul play. However, since Ramesh’s sister was admitted at a hospital, the accused was alone at home. His wife had died a few years back.

What is worrisome is that such crimes are on the rise in the society. Recently, a 17-month-old infant, Sudhaar, was allegedly murdered by his neighbour under Manaknagar police station.

Sudhaar was allegedly drowned by his neighbour in a water tank at RDSO Colony under Manaknagar on August 31. The alleged killer was later arrested. The accused was identified as Kaluram Pal, who lived adjacent to the house of Sudhaar.

According to police, Sudhaar went missing on August 30 afternoon. His family searched for him but in vain. On August 31 morning, Sudhaar’s body was found in the water tank near his house.

Similarly, tragedy struck Guptas in Aashiana police station when the body of their only three-and-a-half-year-old son, who was kidnapped on August 6 evening, was fished out from a canal in Ishwari Kheda village in Mohanlalganj on August 7.

The boy was identified as Harsh Gupta, son of Manish Gupta, a resident of Sector 6, Rajni Khand in Aashiana. Harsh was kidnapped by his uncle, who strangled the boy after sodomising him, and threw the body in a canal near a Hanuman Temple in Telibagh. The accused, Ashish alias Guddu Gupta, a resident of Rajni Khand in Aashiana was later arrested. The accused committed the gruesome act to take revenge for his alleged humiliation by Manish’s wife Neelu.

Speaking to TOI on the rising trend of incidents where minors are falling prey to their neighbours and relatives, professor in psychiatry department of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaja Medical University Harjeet Singh said: “The fear of law among citizens is now missing because of so many instances where injustice had been meted out to them.” This is the basic psychology which is making these accused to commit crime freely, even against children, Prof Singh added.
