NEW DELHI: Commuters travelling on the Jehangirpuri-HUDA City Centre Metro line had to face a harrowing time on Wednesday when a train developed a technical snag and stalled on the track, throwing the rest of the schedule out of gear. The incident escalated as officials of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) took almost an hour to rescue the train and the passengers on board, leading to over-crowding of the stations along the line. The Patel Chowk station, near which the incident occurred, had to be closed down for some time to manage the swelling crowd.

The incident occurred at 12.52pm when due to a fault in the brake system, the train travelling from Jehangirpuri to Gurgaon stopped on the track. Said a DMRC spokesperson, “Prima facie, the fault occurred due to a problem in the train’s internal braking communication system as a result of which, the special safety parking brakes were automatically applied as per the safety design of the train management system.” The train, which was stuck between Patel Chowk and Central Secretariat stations, resumed its journey after a technical team from DMRC released the parking brakes by going below the undercarriage of the train. The affected train was coupled with another train and towed to the next station.

The process took almost an hour, with the train being finally taken to Green Park siding for observation. Services from Rajiv Chowk to Jehangirpuri and Central Secretariat to HUDA City Centre were affected even as DMRC tried to address the problem by running single line operations between Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat. Commuters bore the brunt of the breakdown. Said Maria, “I was waiting when we heard announcements asking people to take the train from Kashmere Gate. When I reached the station, it was even more crowded.”
