Sourav’s ‘debut’ won’t be rushed

Calcutta: Having been off regular cricket for five months, Sourav Ganguly won’t make his Pune Warriors India debut till such time that he’s absolutely confident of actually making a difference.

So, according to The Telegraph’s sources, there’s no guarantee that Sourav is going to feature in the Pune XI which will take on Kings XI Punjab, in Mohali, on Sunday.

“It has largely been left to Sourav… He’s looked pretty good at nets over the past few days, but with so much attention on his IPL comeback, he’s got to inform the think tank when he’s ready to take the field,” one of the sources pointed out, late on Saturday.

He added: “We’ve got to be careful… There’s a big difference between looking good at nets and being match-fit.”

Sourav, one learns, is going to have a “special hit” in the morning and, then, take a call. With Pune already out of the running for honours in this edition, he doesn’t have to gamble. Doesn’t have to try and make a point.

After all, Sourav stands to lose much if he doesn’t get it right. In any case, there are quite a few who feel he shouldn’t have come into IPL-IV as a replacement (for Ashish Nehra).

That a cricketer of his stature needn’t be desperate to clutch at straws.

Sourav wasn’t just ignored by the Kolkata Knight Riders, the franchise which gave him icon status in the first three seasons, but the nine other franchises as well during the January auction for IPL-IV and V.

That the Chris Gayles also went unsold was no consolation.

Meanwhile, according to an agency report from Chandigarh, Pune captain Yuvraj Singh had quite a bit to say on Sourav: “Hopefully, he will get us a win (after seven losses on the trot)… It’s good to have him in the team…

“Someone who was the India captain for such a long time can always help the youngsters… It feels great that Sourav is playing under me… He helped me when he was the captain and, now, it’s my duty to help him…”

Yuvraj, it may be recalled, began his India career as a Sourav protege — back in October 2000.
