Student shot, Sheila says Delhi is insensitive to women

New Delhi: A 20-year-old student has been shot outside her college in Dhaula Kuan in South Delhi. Radhika Tanwar died after being rushed to hospital in a rickshaw by people who witnessed her murder.

“It is a matter of shame for each one of us that the capital city of India is considered the most unsafe city… this is unacceptable to us,” said Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. When asked about why women are safer in cities like Kolkata, Mrs Dikshit said, “Of course women are safe in Kolkata. It’s because of two reasons – you must remember that not only is the police there sensitive but so is society that’s also true of cities like Mumbai and Chennai.”

Radhika was shot at 10.20 am as she was walking across a pedestrian bridge near the Ramlal Anand College, where she was a second-year student. She was with two friends, who were not injured. One bullet was fired.

The police suspects Radhika was attacked by a stalker who lives in her neighbourhood in Naraina. He managed to escape in the commotion that erupted after he fired at Radhika.

“She never told us that she was facing problems from somebody. We don’t know anything and we don’t suspect anybody as of now,” said Vipin Tanwar, Radhika’s brother.

“We have come to know of some incident where she was being stalked. But our inquiry is at a preliminary stage. We will have to get the family and friends to identify him if that is the case,” said senior police officer HGS Dhaliwal.

Angry students from Delhi University’s South Campus participated in a protest march near the place where Radhika was killed.
