Thiruvananthapuram Book Festival starts today

It is the season of festivals. Just after the conclusion of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), the stage is set for the festival of bibliophiles. The fourth Thiruvananthapuram Book Festival will begin on Kanakakkunnu Palace premises on Saturday, at 11 am. Former West Bengal Governor and author Gopalkrishna Gandhi will inaugurate the nine-day festival.
Organised by the Kerala State Institute of Children’s Literature in association with the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival, the festival will feature more than 100 publishers. During the event, awards will be presented to the best ten books of 2010. A five-day writing workshop for children, ‘Copyright Table’ for publishers and a workshop on children’s literature will be organised as part of the festival. Several cultural programmes will also be staged.
Minister for Education and Culture M A Baby will preside over the inaugural function. Left ideologue P Govinda Pillai, Mayor K Chandrika, M P Achuthan MP, GKSF Director K N Sathish and V Sivankutty MLA, among others, will speak at the function.
Major international publishers, including Cambridge University Press, Sage and Scholastic and Indian publishers like Orient Blackswan, National Book Trust India and Left Word will participate in the festival. Almost all Malayalam publishers too will present.
Prominent French artists and designers will attend a workshop for artists, while noted British poets like Alexander Buhler and Bill Herbert will be present at the poet’s meet.
Copyright will be the theme of discussion at ‘Rights table’, which is to be held on December 20 and 21. A workshop on children’s literature will be held from December 22 to 24. ‘New age, new children, new story’ will be the theme of the workshop.
As many as 50 children, interested in writing and art, will attend a workshop on writing, which is to be held during December 22-26. Author Sippi Pallippuram will inaugurate the workshop.
Awards will be presented to authors of 10 best books at 7 pm every day. The winners include, M P Surendran for ‘Thukalpanthinte yatrakal’, Vijayalakshmi for ‘Vijayalakshmiyude Kavitakal’, T M Govindan Kutty for ‘Kalakshepam’, K Sreekumar for ‘Nummude Nadodikadhakalum Aithyhyanagalum’, Panmana Ramachandran for ‘Smrutirekhakal’, K Pappootti for publishing ‘Parinama Vinjanakosham’, P Govinda Pillai for ‘Vyjnanika viplavam oru samskarika charitram’, B Rajeevan for ‘Vaakkukalum vastukalum’ and Resul Pookkutty for ‘Sabtataarapadam’.
The book festival will conclude on December 26. Jnanpith award winner O N V Kurup will be felicitated during the concluding ceremony. A Latin American drama, to be presented at the Thrissur International Theatre Festival, will be staged during the concluding ceremony.
