SHANE Warne last night composed a heartfelt farewell to professional cricket, confirming this Indian Premier League season would be his last.

Warne, 41, broke the news on Twitter, more than four years after playing his last game for Australia. Having also retired from county cricket, he will play four more games for the Rajasthan Royals unless he can bowl them into the finals.

”Thanks for the kind words re my bowling – but it’s 100% my last 4 games of professional cricket unless we make finals,” Warne said. ”A big thankyou to everyone that has helped me – supported me through the ups and downs – hope you have enjoyed watching me play!

Warne may return to the IPL as a mentor or coach.

The incomparable cricketer is still taking wickets – he’s sixth on the IPL wicket-taking list – and has embraced India since struggling there as a Test player.

He led the unfancied Royals to the inaugural title and hopes to replicate that achievement.
